2021-01-06 15:37:31 hi all! 2021-01-06 15:37:34 gfoun: hi! 2021-01-06 15:39:08 gfoun has asked how to best contribute to the docs 2021-01-06 15:41:07 gfoun: the plan is (was?) to use docs.alpinelinux.org as official docs, and have the wiki as a community wiki 2021-01-06 15:43:03 I see, how would that differ in terms of the actual content? What content would be better suited for the community wiki, and what for the official site? Tutorials perhaps ? 2021-01-06 15:44:16 yes, something like that 2021-01-06 15:44:33 alright 2021-01-06 15:44:51 anything that should be official, like install handbook, or developer documentation, policies etc, should be in the official docs 2021-01-06 15:45:02 anythign that needs review before it gets merged 2021-01-06 15:45:16 anythign that needs review before it gets official docs 2021-01-06 15:45:44 SpaceToast has done a great job with the current docs.alpinelinux.org 2021-01-06 15:46:20 we track the docs in gitlab: https://gitlab.alpinelinux.org/alpine/docs 2021-01-06 15:47:15 SpaceToast is still the "official" lead for docs, but I suspect she may appreciate someone else taking over? 2021-01-06 15:47:47 I don't mind reviewing changes and making sure all contributions stand up to the quality standards (i.e an editorial position) 2021-01-06 15:47:55 ok. good 2021-01-06 15:48:19 just ping me if there's something to review and I'll get to it within a week max :) 2021-01-06 15:49:11 i dont think we ever properly announced docs.a.o? would be awesome if we could do so for 3.13 release 2021-01-06 15:49:29 i think we just need someone to look over it 2021-01-06 15:49:34 when's the 3.13 release planned? 2021-01-06 15:49:48 i was hoping to get rc3 out today 2021-01-06 15:49:50 I just got back to working full time, so it's hard for me to put much time into stuff in general 2021-01-06 15:49:52 aha 2021-01-06 15:49:58 so hopefully within a week 2021-01-06 15:50:03 my personal stance on inclusion is: 1. things that are specific to alpine (so alpine projects, things that are not present elsewhere; e.g a dedicated handbook for lbu or even a manual handbook could be a good idea); 2. things that are of direct relevance to people getting into it 2021-01-06 15:50:22 understood. maybe gfoun can spend some time on it? 2021-01-06 15:50:40 no complaints; like I said, just ping me here if there's something to review and I promise to get to it within a week ^^ 2021-01-06 15:50:53 awesome 2021-01-06 15:51:07 I'd start by creating a content map of everything that's written, and then start deciding for the docs.alpinelinux.org overal structure, style, templates ? 2021-01-06 15:51:30 gfoun: docs.alpinelinux.org already exists, go over what's currently there ;) 2021-01-06 15:51:36 the user handbook is fairly complete as far as I'm concerned 2021-01-06 15:52:08 the approach for the structure and style is something between freebsd and gentoo 2021-01-06 15:55:20 already did 2021-01-06 15:59:29 it needs to mention mips64, and vanilla kernel is renamed to lts nowdays 2021-01-06 16:01:40 https://docs.alpinelinux.org/user-handbook/0.1a/Installing/manual.html#_repositories mentions v3.9, we should update that to current 2021-01-06 16:02:39 do we need to? just having a regularly scheduled "bump version" commit isn't that useful, especially since iirc there's some text saying "replace with whatever version you want" 2021-01-06 16:03:41 can we have it generated or something from a global variable? 2021-01-06 16:04:11 v3.9 is not even maintained anymore. it gives the impression that the documentation is outdated and unreliable 2021-01-06 16:04:13 Doesn't really change much, does it? I'll look into it this weekend, please do remind on Friday :) 2021-01-06 16:04:40 https://docs.alpinelinux.org/user-handbook/0.1a/Installing/manual.html#_ntp I don't think we should have warnings like "chrony is bugged" without any reference to the specific issue. otherwiseits impossible o know if the issue is fixed or not 2021-01-06 16:05:29 I think it has been fixed 2021-01-06 16:05:42 but you're right, ideally it should point to a bug 2021-01-06 16:12:54 So, I think I'll just take some time to acclimatize myself to the project/docs and get back to you. I've been only using Alpine for a week or so. Is the source for the user handbook avail on gitlab? Can't see anything resembling it. 2021-01-06 16:13:31 gfoun: https://gitlab.alpinelinux.org/alpine/docs 2021-01-06 16:14:24 yes this is what i was looking at 2021-01-06 16:14:46 the "User Handbook" repo under that are the sources for the user handbook 2021-01-06 16:16:26 under Installing/pages, got it 2021-01-06 16:16:55 need to get more coffee >< 2021-01-08 08:03:31 hi so I was following the how-to setup xfce here -> https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/Xfce_Setup, when I start the lightdm service it does bring up the login screen, however I am not able to login in as any user. A message appears that says "failed to start session". I thought it might polkit not able to log me in so I added it with apk, but there was no change. I looked through the logs but nothing really stood out to me, granted I 2021-01-08 08:03:31 am not sure what exactly in the logs would indicate the problem. has anyone encoutered this type of issue before? 2021-01-08 08:13:13 I think#alpine-linux would be a better channel for user support 2021-01-08 08:16:10 thanks I couldn't find it in the list of rooms 2021-01-08 08:21:03 one last thing about the documentation under the Troubleshooting section of https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/Xfce_Setup the text reads '(that will appeared in lxdm.log if you lack it)' grammatically I believe it should be '(that will appear ...)' 2021-01-08 08:24:11 Ah, do you have a wiki account? Then you could fix that and even add the solution to your problem to troubleshooting once that's fixed :) 2021-01-08 08:42:56 no I do not have a wiki account but I could fix it, granted if I am able to get it working 2021-01-08 08:43:05 :-D 2021-01-10 14:50:05 okay so official documentation goes into the docs.alpine... and other articles go into the wiki? 2021-01-10 14:50:15 from what mps told me 2021-01-10 14:50:19 yes, that's right 2021-01-10 14:50:24 hey SpaceToast 2021-01-10 14:50:32 heya 2021-01-14 16:31:06 there is now a link to docs from main page https://alpinelinux.org 2021-01-14 17:04:14 Yay 2021-01-14 20:31:35 kewl 2021-01-19 17:52:31 docoumentation is surprisingly tricky.. im sure there's a long history of debates over software and standards ill try to brush up on before saying anything lol 2021-01-19 17:53:03 fys mentioned they are interested in helping with documentation 2021-01-19 17:53:20 SpaceToast here has setup docs.a.o 2021-01-19 17:53:50 neat! 2021-01-19 17:54:38 one thing i personally find is documentation is easy for alpine because there's not a lot of custom bolted on stuff 2021-01-19 17:56:30 keeping up with distro specific commands is such a pin 2021-01-19 17:56:33 pain* 2021-01-19 19:23:04 ^
